Organize Attic

I love killing two birds with one stone and this past week that is exactly what I did.  The attic got organize because we got radiant barrier (hello environment friendly house) and we are having a garage sale.  I don’t normally show my own place, but I think this one is worth some bragging.  I am kicking myself since I didn’t take a REAL before picture, but I guess it will keep up my “Neat” facade (believe me it is a facade).  I am so happy I did a purge myself and I got to label my own plastic bins.

Dopp Kit

I love to save time, but some times just having something done is very satisfying.  One thing I just keep DONE is keeping my dopp kit packed.  I don’t travel nearly as much, but when I do it is SO nice to just grab it, throw in medicine and put it in the bag.

Anything I run out of on a trip gets bought on the next trip to the store and stored in the bag, so it will be ready for the next excursion.  The Neat part of me has a compartmentalized bag so I know what is missing when I do the quick check.  SO go to the drug store have fun buying those little shampoos and lotions and pack it up.  Bon Voyage!

Storage Units

I am not a fan of storage units, BUT they do serve a purpose in certain situations.

I have one right now, BUT it is only because we are going to have a garage sale in April. I got it for three months and that is ALL. It has allowed us to separate garage sale items from items we are keeping and we are can still park in the garage. Yesterday I helped a client/friend get stuff ready to put her house on the market. Another good time for a unit.

If you have one and are paying indefinitely you may want to get it cleaned out. You don’t need the stuff because you are not even using it right now.

Where to Start

Over the years I have heard the same thing from clients “I just don’t know where to start.”  To be honest, a lot of the time I don’t either.  There is no right way, but starting in a corner has worked for me.  Starting sorting out items in a corner lets me see where I am and I can glance to the area I have tackled and see there is progress.  The important thing to remember is to stay with it and don’t stop until you satisfied it will work for you.  It will look great and work even better.

Music CD’s

I don’t know about you, but I do know about my clients and myself and we have stacks and stacks of CD’s.  Judging by the dust it is clear we don’t use them often.  Most of us get our music from the internet and play it on some sort of portable player. It is convenient, inexpensive, green and takes up SIGNIFICANT less space.   GreenBizCheck reported from a study that purchasing music digitally reduced CO2 emissions associated with delivering music to consumers by 40-80 percent, as compared to buying a CD at retail.

Taking all that into consideration rip whatever music you still like off  you old CD’s and then sell them.  You will have some good tunes, more space, and hopefully a little money in your pocket.

New Years resolution

Did you know “get organized” is sixth as a New Years resolution. If this is on you list call Neat Nellie.

Photo Cards

I hate throwing away the darling photo cards we get from Christmas, so I cut out the kids and put them on a magnet board to enjoy all year.

Children’s Art Work

I appreciate art and really enjoy learning about it, so when my little Picasso’s started bring home their own master pieces I was thrilled, but quickly realized I was going to be over run by all this paper! It made me understand how many of my clients feel when they are trying to part with something from a loved one and get their paper in order. It is easier for us to get rid of things that are ours verses something someone made or gave us. I doubt any loved one would want you to keep something that was a burden to you be it space or time.

Anyway, back to the art work. I needed a solution before I was up to my neck in construction paper masks and finger painted stars. What I have come up with is scanning the art and then throwing it away. I have a folder for each kid-o and then when I scan it there are dates. I do it once a season (4X a year) and then start collecting again. It is working great and fun to see my little artist’s talent grow.

Organizers Disorder

One would hope that an organizer has EVERYTHING organized.  Not so.  Neat Nellie has been a busy girl and got swapped by office tasks.  I did take some time today to “get organized.”  What is interesting is now that I have that accomplished, I have room physically and more importantly MENTALLY for other “things.”  I know products I need to purchase for my business and came up with some new advertizing venues.  All that said…I know if you get your life organized there will be more room for your “things.”
